The Use of Liquid Nitrogen in Portland Laboratory Research

Cryo-Source has been producing and distributing PurityPlus® liquid nitrogen for Portland-area laboratory use since we first opened for business. What makes this commodity so [[desi|[prefe]7]rable in all kinds of laboratory applications – certainly as a refrigerant – is its capacity to retain temperatures appreciably lower than the freezing point of water.

An earlier blog of ours discusses the use of nitrogen in food processing. In its compact, readily transportable liquid form (which doesn’t need pressurization), we deliver it for laboratory applications as diversified as …

  • cryogenics – encompassing the production and analysis of low temperature extremes and the behavior of materials at such temperatures;
  • cryonics – the long-term protection of biological tissue (blood, reproductive cells, surgical samples, even human bodies) at remarkably low temperatures in order to resuscitate them and reanimate them sometime in the future; also as a way of cryoconserving genetic materials;
  • energy storage (being a mechanism for it);
  • making various scientific detection instruments perform more efficiently; and
  • creating lower pressures in laboratory vacuum systems.

As a coolant, liquid nitrogen is commonly employed by the laboratories we serve …

  • to achieve superconductivity in high-temperature superconductors;
  • to preserve the liquid helium cooling systems of high-field superconducting magnets, for instance those used in nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers and magnetic resonance imaging systems, at an especially low temperature;
  • in cooling baths and other testing situations intended to produce especially low-temperature chemical reactions;
  • in vacuum-pump traps; and
  • in astronomy cameras having CCD image sensors.

These examples, as comprehensive as they are, hardly scratch the surface of liquid nitrogen’s use in the laboratory. Our Portland customers quite often have their own, singular uses for it, just as they do for nitrogen in its gaseous state – which, of course, we also produce.

The truth is, more and more scientific, medical, and industrial research facilities in this area are turn|look|com]104]ing to us for the PurityPlus® nitrogen and liquid nitrogen necessary to achieve their research goals. They’ve found us to be a steady, easily accessible source of these commodities. And they’ve come to count not only on our having them when they need them, but also on their demonstrable quality, our competitive prices, and the expert, personalized service of our people.
